At Paws and Pulses, we are dedicated to raising funds for human and animal cardiology research while spreading awareness about heart health. Our mission is to promote heart health, whether you have two legs or four. We strive to advance the enrichment, prevention, and treatment of heart diseases across all walks of life.

Statistics

The numbers don't lie - cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in humans, dogs, and cats.

Humans

As of 2024, more than 500 million people (16% of the global population) suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

Heart disease is the global leading cause of death, killing an estimated 17.9 million humans annually (≈32% of annual deaths).

Human Causes of Death

Canine Causes of Sudden Death

Dogs

As of 2024, 75% of senior dogs and 10% of all dogs suffer from cardiovascular diseases.

​

The most common condition, Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease (DMVD), accounts for 75% of cases.

Feline Causes of Sudden Death

Cats

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) affects 15% of cats and has a mortality rate of 10-30%.

​

Approximately 30% of cats diagnosed with HCM will develop congestive heart failure or other complications within 2 years of their diagnosis.
